Information for the Solar and Heat Pump Hot Water Industry

In March 2009, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh made an election commitment to accelerate the uptake of solar technology water heaters in Queensland households.

The Queensland Solar Hot Water Program began on 1 July 2009. Solar hot water systems are now being installed with the announcement of the first supplier, Conergy Australia. Negotiations continue with several other shortlisted suppliers and Office of Clean energy expects to announce more suppliers in coming weeks.

The program aims to:

• grow a strong, viable solar hot water industry in Queensland
• increase market demand for solar hot water, and
• deliver affordable renewable energy hot water systems for Queenslanders.

The phase-out of replacement electric storage hot water heaters in all areas of the state from 2012 represents a significant opportunity for market growth. The Solar Hot Water Program is a major industry development and capacity building initiative to help meet this expected future demand.

The Program also aims to reduce participating Queensland household electricity use by approximately 20-30 per cent annually, and help to deliver Queensland's Toward Q2 ambition of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by one-third by 2020.

More than 33,000 application packs have been emailed and posted to Queenslanders who registered their interest in the Program prior to 1 July 2009.

Registrations of Interest are still open to Queenslanders who would like to participate in the program. Program information and eligibility criteria are available to view on this website. Those who register from 1 July, will receive an application pack once the first group of applicants are processed.
